Debra, thanks for the suggestion. You must be like me, we learn from seeing success rather than failure. I will provide good examples of "defining and differentiating," but I'm not far enough along in the selection process to share those. They will be coming, though, in one way or another. Thanks.

I agree with Jill. When I preview resumes for friends and students I always suggest removing the objective. Of course your objective is to get the job, duh! Wouldn't it be fun though to see someone have, Objective: To apply for this job to make my parents happy; but would rather not miss my daily tv programs.

I’m curious to see what some of the “defining and differentiating” statements have been on resumes you’re interested in, Duane. Could you provide a couple of examples here?

Lynn, I can't imagine that a consummate communications professional like you would make these mistakes. I've "borrowed" communications from you for Red Cross projects, so please view that as an indirect compliment!

Jill, I agree that resume objectives are usually meaningless. Career counselors must still be telling people to put them on a resume, though. I am impressed when a resume has a well-written professional profile. It should not be full of cliches that any other candidate could use, but rather something that is defining and differentiating. Even better, the profile would get extra points if it fits within 140 characters. I like your idea!

Thanks, my fellow communicator, for sharing your thoughts.

I don't understand why anyone bothers with an objective on a resume anymore. Isn't the objective to get the job??? Perhaps next time you should ask for their "Twitter Resume", that way you can save lots of time reading only 140 characters instead of 140+ one-page (or more) resumes!
