<p>Job seekers are admonished to set their Facebook settings high so others cannot look over the wall. Some Twitter newbies protect their tweets so strangers cannot follow them. Too many job seekers have been programmed to fear the unknown evil lurking in the shadows of the Internet.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s your opportunity to differentiate yourself! The more your competitors hide themselves, the greater advantage you have to establish your brand. By being transparent and open, you can stand out from the herd.</p>
<p>For any job opening, you&#8217;ll likely compete with dozens (or perhaps hundreds) of people who have work histories, job titles and career accomplishments very similar to yours. From the vantage point of a prospective employer, it looks as if everyone was shaped by the same cookie cutter.</p>
<p>How can you stand out from those who naively believe they can effectively sell themselves in a one-dimensional way? One effective method is to be real. Show others that you are a real, multifaceted person. Show others the splendor of your multidimensional brand.</p>
<p>If you present only your professional persona—as impressive as it might be—you are branding yourself too shallowly. Our <a title="2.0 Defined" href="http://duanehallock.com/2010/02/17/what-is-2-0-a-new-era-defined/" target="_blank">2.0</a> world requires authenticity and transparency. Being authentic and transparent will definitely help you differentiate yourself and your brand.</p>
<p>People like doing business with people they know, or at least with people who present themselves as real-life human beings. A resume or even a LinkedIn profile is usually a sterile, sanitized description of one facet of your brand. Seldom does a resume portray you as a real, multidimensional person.</p>
<p>You need every available tool—including social media—to differentiate yourself in a crowded job market. Others may be afraid of using social media to reveal who they are personally. Their trepidation can work to your advantage. Their timidity gives you a great branding opportunity.</p>
<p>You can differentiate yourself by presenting yourself as a real person, not just a professional silhouette. You can differentiate yourself by opening up, by being real and by being transparent.</p>
<p>Deliberately look for opportunities to blur the lines that separate the personal and professional compartments of your life.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>I</strong>f you&#8217;re looking for a job, you face strong competition from others who are also looking for jobs.</p>
<p>To succeed, you must stand out from the rest of the pack. You&#8217;ve got to be different. You cannot blend in and look like everyone else.</p>
<p>The first step in differentiating yourself is to know who your competitors are. You&#8217;ll want to learn as much as you can about others who are applying for the same jobs you are seeking. You must study your competition.</p>
<p>One way to to do this is look at their profiles on LinkedIn. Take the list of <a title="Keywords Defining Your Brand" href="http://duanehallock.com/2012/01/18/know-your-brand/" target="_blank">keywords</a> that describe you and then search for others in LinkedIn who use those same words.</p>
<p>Notice which profiles pop up. Pick several individuals and observe how they describe themselves. Study their profiles—their career summaries, specialties, experience and skills. Notice which words and phrases they use to describe themselves.</p>
<p>Pay attention to their writing style. Do they talk in the first or third person? Do they sound conversational? Are they interesting? Look for examples of individuals who have effectively converted their features into <a title="Convert Your Features into Benefits" href="http://duanehallock.wordpress.com/2012/01/19/convert-features/" target="_blank">benefits</a>?</p>
<p>You can differentiate yourself from others only when you 1) know yourself and 2) know your competition. When you understand who your competitors are and how you are differentiated from them, you are ready to begin selling your brand in a competitive job market.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>I</strong>n a job search, if you are not differentiated you are not marketable.</p>
<p>A few years ago I was hiring for an open position on my marketing and communications team. Although I was bombarded with 200 applications, I personally considered the merits of every single candidate.</p>
<p>Very quickly, though, my eyes glazed over. Everyone looked alike. They all seemed to be saying the same thing. They even used the same clichés to describe themselves. Everyone claims to be:</p>
<ul>
<li> Creative.</li>
<li> An excellent communicator.</li>
<li> A problem solver.</li>
<li> Highly motivated.</li>
<li> Results oriented.</li>
<li> Hard working.</li>
</ul>
<p>Everyone, it seemed, described himself or herself in the exact same way. Had I changed the names at the top of each resume, it wouldn&#8217;t have mattered. Quite frankly, I felt as if I&#8217;d walked into a Baskin-Robbins store where the only flavor was vanilla. Everyone, it seemed, had bought the same book on writing cover letters and they even selected the same buzz phrases to use.</p>
<p>A prospective employer has no reason to hire you if you can’t differentiate yourself in a job search. Three ways to be different and stand out from the rest of the pack are:</p>
<ol>
<li><strong><a title="Know Your Competition" href="http://duanehallock.com/2012/01/24/know-your-competition/" target="_blank">Know your competition</a>.</strong> It goes without saying, but you will never differentiate yourself from others unless you know who they are.</li>
<li><strong><a title="Create an Elevator Speech" href="http://duanehallock.com/2012/01/25/elevator-speech/" target="_blank">Create a unique elevator pitch</a>.</strong> In 30 seconds, you must be able to describe yourself to a prospective employer so he or she takes an interest and wants to learn more about you.</li>
<li><strong><a title="Blend Personal and Professional" href="http://duanehallock.com/2012/01/26/blend-personal-professional/" target="_blank">Blend your personal and professional lives</a>.</strong> An effective brand is never one dimensional. You are a unique and multifaceted person, and your brand is a rich combination of a) who you are professionally, b) who you are personally and c) what you think and how you see the world around you.</li>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>S</strong>ometimes marketing is viewed as a magical elixir that will somehow cure whatever ails you.</p>
<p>In my 20-plus years of marketing experience, I&#8217;ve come to realize that good marketing is based more upon common sense than upon creativity. Though marketing can work wonders, it is not a panacea that will transform failure into success.</p>
<p>As much as I value good marketing, I believe there are times <em>not </em>to launch a marketing campaign. My advice is to delay any marketing activities when:</p>
<ol>
<li>We are unclear what success will actually look like. Without clearly defined goals, we are merely groping in the dark, hoping to grasp something—anything—of value.</li>
<li>We feel compelled to act before we think. In our fast-paced world, we will always experience the strong gravitational pull of urgency. Focusing on what is urgent, though, will often entice us to overlook strategy and jump prematurely into tactics.</li>
<li>We want to begin with communications. A good marketing process <em>ends </em>with communications but that&#8217;s never a good place to begin.</li>
<li>We focus on obstacles rather than opportunities. Though we must always understand reality, we will never leave the starting blocks if we focus on the hurdles between us and the finish line.</li>
<li>We have no champion for the product or service. We may all agree that a particular program is important, but unless someone with passion assumes ownership of the program&#8217;s success, it will flounder. Of course, marketers will be the easy targets of those who need to blame someone for a product&#8217;s failure.</li>
<li>We believe everything will be okay if only we can &#8220;get the word out.&#8221; I cannot be more emphatic in stating this: <a title="Raising Awareness Is Not a Marketing Goal" href="http://duanehallock.com/2010/04/21/raising-awareness/" target="_blank"> raising awareness is not a marketing goal</a>.</li>
<li>We talk more than we listen. Marketing success on a 2.0 world is all about having conversations, not trying to speak louder.</li>
<li>We are unable to profile a target audience. Only the naive believe there really is such a thing as the &#8220;general public.&#8221; We are headed towards marketing failure if we neglect to define a primary audience. After all, to target everyone is to hit no one.</li>
<li>We ignore the concept of marketing exchanges. Marketing is based upon the premise that we must build win-win relationships where we exchange value for value. Marketing is never a one-way transaction.</li>
<li>We cannot differentiate our product or service. If we don&#8217;t know who our competitors are, and if we cannot articulate how we are different and better, then my advice is simple:  Turn off the lights, lock the door and go home. The party is over.</li>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>H</strong>ypothetically, let&#8217;s assume I&#8217;m looking to hire a new member of my marketing team. In reality, my public relations manager will be leaving in a couple of weeks, so I actually am making plans on how I&#8217;ll fill the void created by her departure.</p>
<p>Wait, though, before faxing me your resume. (Do people still do that? I hope not.) I have been asked to delay recruiting until the expense budget comes into better focus. The hiring process is frozen, but while we await the spring thaw, let&#8217;s return to my hypothetical situation.</p>
<p>As I think about the importance of building a strong marketing team, I have already updated the job description. The social media revolution mandates new expectations that are reflected in several bullet points on the revised list of job duties. Of course, I&#8217;ll also be looking for someone who meets a minimum threshold of necessary skills, talents and experience.</p>
<p>Above and beyond that, though, I will almost certainly select someone who:</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Has an impressive digital footprint</strong>. Before calling someone in for an interview, you can bet I will Google his or her name. There are so many people looking for jobs that I cannot imagine interviewing someone who does not have an impressive amount of information readily available on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, a personal blog, an online portfolio, or some other searchable platform.</li>
<li><strong>Is well branded</strong>. I want to know what a person stands for, both personally and professionally. A good brand makes promises and I need to have some idea of what I can expect from anyone who expresses an interest in being part of my team.</li>
<li><strong>Is differentiated</strong>. Does this person stand out from the rest of the pack? Quite frankly, I won&#8217;t even notice someone who blends into the vast, beige-colored landscape populated by thousands of job seekers whose clichè-ridden resumes were shaped by the same cookie cutter. (See my previous <a title="Differentiate Yourself Using Facebook" href="http://duanehallock.com/2010/03/31/differentiate-with-facebook/" target="_blank">blog post</a> about using Facebook as a tool to differentiate yourself in a job search.)</li>
<li><strong>Is savvy with traditional media</strong>. The ideal person will have a good understanding of traditional media—TV, radio and newspapers. He or she will also have experience in proactively pitching good story ideas and in building strong relationships with people inside the news media.</li>
<li><strong>Is savvy with social media</strong>. The right person will have moved far beyond the initial process of setting up profiles on various social media platforms. He or she will have demonstrated an ability to a) <strong><em>listen </em></strong>using social media tools, b) <strong><em>have sustained conversations</em></strong> in social media and c) <strong><em>create content</em></strong> valued by others who are swimming in the deeper end of the social media pool.</li>
</ol>
<p>Three years ago when I most recently hired someone, the criteria were somewhat different. At that time I relied heavily upon two lists. One described my expectations for <a title="Manifesto for Individual Responsibility" href="http://duanehallock.com/2010/09/01/manifesto-individual/" target="_blank">individual responsibility</a> and the other focused on <a title="Manifesto for Team Performance" href="http://duanehallock.com/2010/09/08/manifesto-team/" target="_blank">team performance</a>. Though I&#8217;ve added criteria, both lists are still relevant today. So, here&#8217;s my question:</p>
<p>If, hypothetically, you are looking for a marketing job, how would you measure up?</p>

<p><strong>T</strong>he better I define marketing&#8217;s niche within my organization, the more effective I am in producing results.</p>
<p>To help clarify my unique role as a marketer, I regularly ask myself, &#8220;What do I do that no one else can do as well?&#8221; On a departmental level, I also ask, &#8220;What contribution does marketing make that cannot be made as effectively anywhere else?&#8221;</p>
<p>Too often in nonprofit organizations, marketing and communications are relegated to be subordinate to fundraising. In my opinion, such an organizational alignment weakens marketing&#8217;s effectiveness and ultimately hampers the organization&#8217;s success in fulfilling its mission.</p>
<p>Granted, marketing must support fundraising, but the two are not one in the same. Marketing is a unique profession separate from that of raising money. Kivi Leroux Miller, in her excellent book <em><a title="Kivi's book on Amazon.com" href="http://amzn.to/bxzGMc" target="_blank">The Nonprofit Marketing Guide</a>,</em> says:</p>
<blockquote><p>Although you can have successful long-term (nonprofit) marketing campaigns that don&#8217;t involve fundraising, you cannot have successful long-term fundraising campaigns without marketing. Marketing and communications are how you talk to your donors in between those times when you ask for money.</p></blockquote>
<p>My efforts as a professional marketer can result in donors being more engaged, volunteers giving of themselves in more meaningful ways and customers making better purchasing decisions.</p>
<p>As I think about the unlimited potential of a differentiated marketing program, I find renewed energy. I am professionally rejuvenated.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>M</strong>arketing is not as complicated as some want you to think. Good marketing is based upon common sense, though such sense is uncommon.</p>
<p>With a commitment to successful marketing, I invite you to join me in believing  that:</p>
<ol>
<li>Marketing will flounder when not in pursuit of a measurable goal.</li>
<li>If a product, service or even a person cannot be differentiated, it cannot be marketed.</li>
<li>Marketing will fail unless strategy drives tactics, not vice versa.</li>
<li>Marketing must be based upon the concept of exchanges. Without a quid-pro-quo exchange, we will never have a solid marketing program.</li>
<li>Value can be defined only by the customer, not by the company producing the product or service. (Nonprofit organizations especially have trouble with this.)</li>
<li>The social media revolution is the best thing to happen to marketing in a long, long time, even though the tools for achieving marketing success have forever changed.</li>
<li>Old-school marketers who try to control the message will become increasingly frustrated, disoriented and ultimately obsolete.</li>
<li>You are still functioning in a 1.0 world—even if you&#8217;re using 2.0 tools—when you are <em>not </em>creating community and engaging people in conversations.</li>
<li>If we aim our message at no one in particular, we shouldn&#8217;t be surprised if no one in particular responds.</li>

As I talked with the five finalists, I observed certain characteristics among those who interviewed exceptionally well. Afterward I jotted down a few notes that might be helpful to others who are preparing for a job interview.</p>
<p>First, be aware that by the time you are scheduled for an interview you have already cleared several hurdles. Apparently you said something in your cover letter to differentiate yourself from the herd of other applicants. The content of your resume indicates that you&#8217;ve met the essential criteria listed in the job description. Without question, the person interviewing you has already Googled your name to find any additional information contained in your digital footprint.</p>
<p>Congratulations! You&#8217;re on base and in scoring position. You haven&#8217;t yet crossed home plate, though, so here are my coaching tips. To emerge the winner, here are several items to remember:</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Be yourself</strong>. If you don&#8217;t feel comfortable &#8220;in your own skin&#8221; during the interview, that might be an indication that you won&#8217;t be comfortable in the job itself.</li>
<li><strong>Exchange enough information</strong> so both parties can make a rational decision about whether this will be a good match. Don&#8217;t think of the interview as &#8220;selling&#8221; yourself. Think of it as a first date where you&#8217;re just talking to see if there&#8217;s potential for a long-term relationship.</li>
<li><strong>Tell stories</strong>. Make them interesting. Make them brief.<span id="more-1083"></span></li>
<li><strong>Never denigrate a current or former employer</strong>. I was disappointed several years ago when my strongest candidate (on paper) began the interview by telling me everything wrong with her current employer. Though we talked for 45 minutes, the interview was actually over within the first seven minutes.</li>
<li><strong>Help the interviewer envision you as already being successful</strong> once you&#8217;ve been hired. Twice I&#8217;ve selected people for my marketing team who gave me written lists of things they anticipated doing during their first 90 days on the job.</li>
<li><strong>Ask good questions</strong>. When I&#8217;m interviewing candidates, I pay special attention to the types of questions they ask me. That tells me whether they are really engaged in the conversation or just going through the motions. The best candidates have the best questions.</li>
<li><strong>Ask for feedback</strong>. Make sure you have clarified everything the hiring manager will need to make an informed decision.</li>
<li><strong>Do not be the first to mention compensation</strong>. As a rule of thumb, the first person to bring up money is at a negotiating disadvantage.</li>
<li><strong>Find reasons to follow up</strong>. Then make sure you actually do follow up. Quickly.</li>
<li><strong>Have a strong closing statement</strong>. Talk about your growing interest in being part of the team. Mention specific reasons why you would be successful in the new position.</li>
</ol>
<p>It helps to think of the interview as a two-way conversation, not an interrogation. Be a good conversationalist and you&#8217;ll likely be a good interviewee. Good luck!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>T</strong>his week a headline on CNN grabbed my attention. It read, &#8220;Young job-seekers hiding their Facebook pages.&#8221;</p>
<p>My first thought was, &#8220;That&#8217;s pretty stupid!&#8221;</p>
<p>My second thought was, &#8220;If it&#8217;s not stupid, it&#8217;s at least naive.&#8221;</p>
<p>If you are looking for a job, you already have strong competition from other job seekers. Therefore, you need every available tool to differentiate yourself in a crowded job market.  Facebook can be a very effective tool for branding yourself.</p>
<p>The CNN article began with the story of a college student who wanted &#8220;to keep his personal life (hidden) from potential employers while applying for summer internships.&#8221; I&#8217;d like to remind that young person that there is no shortage of people applying for those same internships. So, what sets him apart from all the others? How is he special? How is he differentiated?</p>
<p>The 2.0 world we live in requires authenticity and transparency. Those who are inexperienced in branding themselves naively believe they can present themselves in a one-dimensional way.<span id="more-2586"></span></p>
<p>People like doing business with people they know, or at least people who present themselves as real-life human beings. A resume or even a LinkedIn profile is usually a sterile, sanitized description of your job title, your responsibilities and perhaps other work-related stuff. Seldom does it portray you as a real, multi-dimensional person.</p>
<p>For any given job opening, you&#8217;ll likely be up against dozens of people who look as if they were cast in the same mold as you were. They have similar work histories, job titles and career accomplishments. So what might make you stand out from the rest of the pack? One way is to present yourself as a real person.</p>
<p>Though I&#8217;m not in a job search, I want my personal/professional branding to be multi-dimensional. Of course, I want people to know me as a marketing professional. The problem is there are thousands and thousands of other good marketing professionals. So on a deeper level, I also want people to see me as a loving husband, a proud father, a grieving son mourning the sudden death of his beloved mother, an involved community citizen, a committed church member or whatever else might give me common ground with a new friend. Facebook can be an effective way of doing that.</p>
<p>Those who have nothing to hide should embrace the fact that in this 2.0 world there really aren&#8217;t any secrets, especially for those interested in effectively branding themselves. Authentic transparency can be a very differentiating attribute.</p>
<p>So here are some questions for anyone looking for a job (and even those like me who are not) — How are you using Facebook to brand yourself, both professionally and personally? Are your Facebook privacy settings set too high? If so, why? Are you hiding something? Okay, that was probably a dumb question, but in a transparent 2.0 world you never want to give the impression that you might be.</p>
<p>Open up. Be real. Be yourself. You&#8217;ll find that&#8217;s a very liberating, invigorating and differentiating way to go through life. And to find a job.</p>

<p>That&#8217;s an impressive title, but what does it mean? What does he really do? What impact does he actually make?</p>
<p>In seven words on LinkedIn, Mark summarizes his job as &#8220;<span style="color:#000000;"><strong>helping you find the information you need</strong></span>.&#8221;</p>
<p>I really like that &#8220;job description&#8221; for three reasons:</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>It&#8217;s simple</strong>. I can understand it without having to translate industry jargon.</li>
<li><strong>It&#8217;s differentiating</strong>. It really describes what <em>he </em>does, not what his company or co-workers do.</li>
<li><strong>It&#8217;s outwardly focused</strong>. He describes what he does for others. He focuses on the benefits he provides, not the process involved.<span id="more-2288"></span></li>
</ol>
<p>Recently I stumbled into a LinkedIn discussion that challenged members within a nonprofit group to &#8220;describe what you do in seven words or less.&#8221; Here are several comments that caught my eye:</p>
<p>•  Help nonprofits tell stories that energize stakeholders.<span style="color:#999999;"> <span style="color:#808080;"><em>—copywriter</em></span></span><br />
•  Find funding. Write proposals. Manage programs.<span style="color:#999999;"> <span style="color:#808080;"><em>—consultant</em></span></span><br />
•  Tell Oklahoma&#8217;s story through its people.<span style="color:#999999;"> <span style="color:#808080;"><em>—fundraiser</em></span></span><br />
•  Help kids fight cancer.<span style="color:#999999;"> <span style="color:#808080;"><em>—marketer</em></span></span><br />
•  Give Nepali children a fair chance.<span style="color:#999999;"> <span style="color:#808080;"><em>—board chair</em></span></span><br />
•  Help military members adopt adult shelter pets.<span style="color:#999999;"> </span><em><span style="color:#808080;">—executive director</span><br />
</em>•  Give male survivors of sexual abuse hope.<span style="color:#808080;"> <em>—IT specialist</em></span><br />
•  Help mature displaced workers find jobs.<span style="color:#999999;"> <span style="color:#808080;"><em>—job counselor</em></span></span><br />
•  Bring citizens together to enjoy the arts.<span style="color:#999999;"> <span style="color:#808080;"><em>—fundraiser</em></span></span><br />
•  Help bereaved children and families manage grief.<span style="color:#999999;"> <span style="color:#808080;"><em>—marketer</em></span></span><br />
•  Create publications that inspire people to action.<span style="color:#999999;"> <span style="color:#808080;"><em>—graphic designer</em></span></span></p>
<p>Granted, not all these  comments are 1) simple, 2) differentiating and 3) outwardly focused. Yet they are intriguing and better than most job descriptions. Here are a few, though, that did nothing for me. They were a meaningless mix of mundane words, process-focused phrases or tired clichés:</p>
<p>•  Help others realize their dreams and goals.<br />
•  Beg for money—lots of money.<br />
•  Raise funds to help dreams come true.<br />
•  Raise money and awareness to change lives.<br />
•  Shout out our message to the world.</p>
<p>I challenge you think about the work you do and the impact you have on others. Then, describe your job in seven words or less. That&#8217;s a tough assignment. I&#8217;m still crafting my seven-word job description.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll close, though, with one that is close to my heart. My son, <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/greghallock">Greg</a>, is an elementary school teacher who says his work is &#8220;helping children discover, learn and grown.&#8221;</p>
